Skiing & Snowmobiling
The location of Sault Ste. Marie amongst three Great Lakes, coupled with the Canadian Shield to the north means that we get lots of snow for winter lovers. The Lakes also provide a moderating effect, keeping our weather a bit cooler in the summer, and warmer in the winter in comparison to other locations in Northern Ontario.
Downhill enthusiasts love the skiiing at Searchmont Resort, approximately a 45 minute drive North of the city. Searchmont has three chair lifts, with conditions that are usually un-crowded in comparison to hills in other parts of the province or Michigan. The hill has runs to challenge any skier from beginner to expert. More information is available on the Searchmont website.
Also in the area are two very popular cross country ski areas that run through some great wilderness. Snowshoes are also popular in these areas. Visit the Hiawatha Highlands website, or the Stokely Creek website to learn more about each of these popular cross country skiing areas.
If you enjoy snowmobiling, the Sault also boasts some great snowmobile trails to the North and East of the city. You can ride all day and never be in the same place twice! For more information about snowmobile trails in the area visit the Sault Trailblazers Snowmobile Club website.
